GutSee CEO Joanna Wiecek and her team were awarded first place at the European Defense Tech Hackathon in Warsaw, Poland. PhageX team focused on addressing the problem of antibiotic-resistant infections on the battlefield using phages – viruses which target and kill dangerous bacteria. The problem they set out to address was challenging: up to 60% of battlefield wounds are resistant to antibiotics – which can be life-changing or lethal without treatment. Their solution uses portable sequencing, cutting-edge machine learning and targeted phage therapy to deliver effective, personalised treatment recipes in under seven hours. PhageX is now integrated into our company’s pipeline alongside our Gut-AI platform for developing diagnostics and treatments for IBS and IBD. The phage-matching AI models are directly transferrable between applications in battlefield wounds and the gut microbiome – enabling us to design phage cocktails for multiple future applications.
